DVD of the Day #277 - Mark Twain’s America
This is one of the twenty packaged DVD’s that came in the IMAX Ultimate Collection I managed to get off Swapadvd.com Yay for 20 free documentaries, right?
This was a 53 minute look at not only Samuel Clemens, but the world in which he grew up. Things interspersed between photographs, stills and recreations of yesteryear juxtaposed with modern-day Hannibal, MO and the Mark Twain fesitval they have every year. You got to see a Hannibal native who build a steamboat from scratch, here an actor read pieces of Twain’s life and a discussion of Twain’s views on everything from the Civil War to crime.
This was a cute piece that I chose to view first because everything else in IMAX has been basically animals or space. The film looks great in high def thanks to the HD DVD player’s upconverter aspect, but there’s only so much you can do with crumbling photos and newspaper clippings. This reall is only of interest to Twain fans or Literature majors. I still had a lot of fun with it, especially as I had no idea what to expect from it. It’s not worth keeping on its own, but as part of a set, why not?
Is It Worth Keeping? We’ll have to see how the rest of the set fares.
