The 25 Best Starrcade Matches

I’m currently watching the Top 25 matches of Starrcade as voted by WCW fans, and I have to admit, I’m pretty disappointed in what was chosen as a lot of it isn’t what I would call quality. As such I thought I’d make my own list of what should have been the top 25. Never let WWE fans vote on WCW matches as they’ll vote by name recognition rather than quality.

This list is in no particular order save for year. If the match is in bold, it’s actually on the collection.

1983
#1. Dog Collar Match: Greg Valentine/Rowdy Roddy Piper

#2.World Title Match: Harley Race/Ric Flair (Note that it was good, but it is a huge piece of history. Plus Flair wins with a high cross body!)

1984
#3. US Title Match: Tully Blanchard/Rick Steamboat

1985
#4. “I Quit” Steel Cage Match for the US title: Magnum T.A./Tully Blanchard (Easily the greatest match in Starrcade history)

1986
#5. Strap Match: Rick Rude/Wahoo McDaniel

#6. Steel Cage Match for the World Tag Team Titles: Rock N’ Roll Express/Ole and Arn Anderson

#7. Scaffold Match: The Road Warriors/The Midnight Express

#8. World Title: Rick Flair/Nikita Koloff

1987

#9. Scaffold Match: ROck N’ Roll Express/The Midnight Express

1988
#10. The Midnight Express/Randy Rose and Dennis Condrey

1989
#11. FInals of the Iron Man Tournament: Sting/Ric Flair

1990
#12. Doom/Barry Whindam and Arn Anderson (The fact this match is not on the DVD collection is a fucking disgrace. It’s not as good as Doom/Flair and Arn, but it’s still the best no-contest match I’ve ever seen)

#13. Texas Bullrope match for the US Title: Lex Luger/Stan Hansen

1991
Nothing. It was awful. Lethal Lottery was a great concept though.

1992
#14. The Great Muta and Barry Windham defeated Brian Pillman and 2 Cold Scorpio (LOOK AT THIS MATCH! JUST THE NAMES ON PAPER!)

#15. NWA World Title Match: Masahiro Chono/Great Muta (How is this not on here! MUTA Vs. CHONO!)

#16. King of Cable FInal: Big Van Vader/Sting

1993
#17. World Title: Big Van Vader/Ric Flair

1994
Nothing. Easily the worst Starrcade EVER.

1995
#18. Jushin Liger/Chris Benoit (I KNOW why this didn’t get in…)

1996
#19. J-Crown vs WCW CW Title: Ultimo Dragon/Dean Malenko

#20. Akira Hokoto/Madusa Micelli

#21. Rey Mysterio Jr./Jushin Thunder Liger

1997
#22. WCW World Title: Sting/Hogan (Not because it was good, but because it was THE most anticipated match EVER in the history of Pro Wrestling and then they fucked it up in every way humanly possible)

#23. US Title: Diamond Dallas Page/Curt Hennig

1998
Nothing. This was the PPV that offically marked the death knell of WCW thanks to Nash’s booking.

1999
#24. World Title: Bret Hart/Goldberg (Concussion kick FTW! An awful awful match. It’s historical, but a train wreck)

2000

#25. Three way ladder match: 3 Count vs. Jung Dragons Vs. Noble and Karagais

Note I refused to include any Dusty Finishes . ‘

Alas, after going through all the Starrcades I could really only name 21 matches that deserved to be on there. Okay.

From sheer numbers it appears 1986 was the best Starrcade with 1992 and 1996 tying for second.

I also only agree with 11 of the 25 matches shown. Thankfully of those 11, 8 of them are in the top 10. The two I don’t agree with are Steiners/LoD (Bad rushed match) and Malenko/Guerrero (They had many better matches than this one. This was was pretty sloppy)
