Weekend

This is going to be the busiest week of the year for me. Once July 27th rolls around, it’ll be smooth sailing for the rest of the year. Hopefully DHGF can function without me for three days.

Saturday was awesome because we hit Nando’s, which opened its first US location Weds here in DC. AWESOME FOOD! Heather and Vlad really liked it, especially the Peri-Peri sauces and the ability to dip. I was very happy with the food. It wasn’t quite up to the Aussie and UK branches I’ve been to, as they served Fries instead of peri-peri chips, and they didn’t have the stuffed cock for sale, but it’s close enough for government work and everyone in DC that eats meat needs to hit up that place ASAP. Also when we went? It was not only packed, but most of the people there were speaking with accents.

Sunday I got up and did a long morning run before hitting a 9am showing of The Dark Knight. Every seat was sold out by the time the film started. I’ve never seen that for an early showing before. My thoughts on the film? It was good, but not great and certainly nowhere near the fanboy hype I’ve been seeing online. It was neither the best Batman movie, and definitely not the best super hero movie. Ledger was good, but the Joker was better written then he was acted. He defnitely doesn’t deserve the Oscar talk he’s been getting, as the character is so one dimensional. As well, Ledger brings nothing new to the role as to be honest, he’s just aping Jack who was aping Cesear Romero. It was nice to see him use Romero’s laugh at times which soldifies the one thing everyone who has every played the Joker has ever said - you can’t outdo Romero in this role. Ledger was good, and it’s certainly better then the other crap he’s been in like “A Knight’s Tale,” but he’s a distant fourth to the three actors who really defined the role.

Bale as always was an amazing Bruce Wayne, but a Batman that makes me laugh more than Adam West. Bale gets Batman, but he can’t act the part. From his horrible facial expressions to his horrible Batman voice that actually made people in the theatre laugh out loud on more than one occasion, Bale just is a great actor on paper to play the World’s Greatest Detective, but he can’t vocalize the part.

Freeman, Oldman, and Caine were amazing, but I feel bad for Oldman having to deliver that end monologue because it damn sure fell into camp territory.

Aaron Eckhart however was the star of the film and the actor who really deserves the Oscar talk. It’s easily the most fully fleshed out character in a super hero movie ever, and Harvey Dent’s fall from grace into Two-Face was perfect. It’s sad that a dead drug addict whose character had no actual definition to it is overshadowing the amazing job Eckhart put into the film.

So overall it’s worth seeing, and even worth buying, but it has a lot of problems ranging from the length created by the unecessary half hour tacked on by “Batman goes to Hong Kong” and some plot issues. There were some amazing scenes including one that no doubt pissed off every longtime Batman fan (including me) only to learn later on it was a swerve. Sadly, they did this exact thing in Batman Begins as well making me wonder if the writers watched WCW Monday Nitro in the late 1990’s. Don’t believe the hype, but don’t worry as it’s still a good movie. It’s just not even in the top five superhero movies of all time.

Other than that it was a long workout weekend and the writing of 3 Pokemon articles and some playing of Pokemon Ranger 2: Shadows of Alma. Huzzah.
