Australia rocked by ‘lesbian’ koala revelation
Sunday February 25, 2007
By Roger Dobson

Female koalas indulge in lesbian “sex sessions”, rejecting male suitors and attempting to mate with each other, sometimes up to five at a time, according to researchers. The furry, eucalyptus-eating creatures appear to develop this tendency for same-sex liaisons when they are in captivity. In the wild, they remain heterosexual.

Scientists monitoring the marsupials with digital cameras counted three homosexual interactions for every heterosexual one.

“Some females rejected the advances of males that were in their enclosures, only to become willing participants in homosexual encounters immediately after,” say the researchers.

“On several occasions more than one pair of females shared the same pole, and multiple females mounted each other simultaneously. At least one multiple encounter involved five female koalas.

“One theory put forward by the researchers is that the females do it to attract males; another is that it is simply hormonal, or that it is a stress reliever.

Scientists from the University of Queensland studied 130 koalas in captivity and will publish their results in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science.

“Our aim was to determine the extent of differences in the homosexual and heterosexual behaviour of female koalas and thereby to determine the purpose of female homosexual behaviour in the koala,” say the researchers.

“Wild koalas brought into captivity clearly display homosexual behaviour on a regular basis. A total of 15 heterosexual and 43 homosexual interactions were recorded in separate animals. Homosexual behaviour was restricted to females only. Heterosexual encounters were typically twice as long as homosexual encounters,” they add.

1. Sent off 26 writing resumes last night. Everything from National Geographic toUS World & News. Let’s see who bites. It felt really good too.

2. I ended up watching Garfield’s Halloween while doing the resumes. Why is it that I ate the comic strip, but I actually like the Garfield cartoon. Especially the Halloween episode. That fucker is in my top ten favorite cartoons of all time.

3. Unhallowed pre-release this Saturday. Mayhaps I will go. Mayhaps not. Unsure yet. Still, I do want that Strahd Von Zarovich figure.

4. Did some wheeling and dealing with Pokemon back in New York. We’ll see if it pays off.

5. It’s supposed to snow big time again. Ugh. Fuck.

Tuesday blahs.

Man this is going to be a crazy ass busy week at work. So many implementations they want me to make, and I don’t think they realize how time consuming it will take to do all these changes. Still, it’s converting to an entirely new way of doing things, so no matter what it’s going to be monotonious and long in regards to making any changes, but yeesh…am I going to be busy all week. Another week without having lunch! YAY!

I’ve been pretty down for a while, but I found that last night while updating my writer’s resume that really helped to boost my spirits. I’ve been feeling for a while that I’m 6 months from 30 and that it doesn’t seem like I’ve really accomplished anything. However, in updating this resume, it reminds me that my “not doing anything with my life” is still more than 95-98% of humanity has done, and so although I still feel like I should have done and be doing a lot more, I just have to remind myself that I push myself way too much a lot of times.

Plus the sending off my resume to other writing jobs should cheer me up a bit. Kind of really really bored without IP, but god knows I don’t want to even so much as look at another video game for some time still. Maybe National Geographic, Gourmet, or the like will have something for me and give me some time filler.

It’s going to snow another foot! FUCK!

It totally doesn’t feel like a Monday.

I love working from home. I feel so much more productive as it’s my computer and I’m not at that nerve destroying and back spasming setup that is my desk setup at the day job. I can pet a rabbit while doing a download or some spreadsheet work. I can have background noises other than the BBC or NPR in the background. It’s serene and I can zen out and thus be more productive.  I can take a nap for lunch! If I could do this all the time, I would. It’s very calming and yet productive at the same time.

Still waiting for the plow.  Surprise!

I could really go for some Vietnamese food right now.

I feel like I’m running out of anything substantial to say. I haven’t had a wacky adventure in like well, a month. It’s all been pretty mundane/normal everyday life stuff. It’s probably just a side effect of being trapped in the flat for 2 straight days.

SPRING! I NEED SPRING!

God I hate winter

Monday, February 26th, 2007

I’m working from home today because I shoveled out my car yesterday only to have the plow come by and trap me back in last night.  I was like, “Fuck this.” So I’m waiting for it to come by again, and then I’m going to chovel myself free so the same thing doesn’t happen again. Holy hell, how can anyone like this weather?

Yesterday was the most boring day ever. Total cabin fever and apathy towards everything. I got a ton of stuff done around the home, but my god was I stir crazy.

I realized yesterday I’ve been massively stressed out and actually pretty unhappy as of late. Yeah I know, me in the dumps is the equiv of everyone else being happy, but when you have THAT much time on your hand and you introspect as much as I do, you end up thinking too much. December was the LJ/Manchester fiasco, along with finally burning out from IP. Jan was all that travelling and day job work just hit me to the point of burnout. Feb was the car accident and girl shit. Yesterday was actually my first day of relaxing since wow…Thanksgiving. The first day I didn’t have a massive plate of shit to do. And it all just hit me like a ton of bricks. I’ll extrapolate more on this and the possible reasons I’ve bene feeling this way over lunch. I know I’m not been 100% lately, but at least now I have an idea why.

Jesus what a long weekend

I think I got four hours of sleep last night. In bed by 4, up at 7:45am. I just couldn’t sleep anymore.

Yesterday was both good and bloody awful. I had my orchestra thingie to go to. They were doing Bach and Brahms and I really wanted to go to this, but then of course…there was the snow.

As most of you aren’t here in MN that read this, let me explain. Yesterday it snowed. A lot. About 18 inches and then some. All day. Very hard. And in typical fashion here, the snow plows weren’t out until oh…11pm at the earliest that I saw. Driving conditions were bloody awful and all night I saw car wreck after car wreck. About 6pm, it wasn’t too bad, but cars were still nailing each other, skidding into ditches and getting stuck. I ended up driving to NE MN to pick up the girl I took to the concert, then all the way back to Nicollet Mall for Orchestral Hall.

The concert was…underwhelming. Everything just seemed off regarding that night’s performance. Even the gguest pianist made a few noticable oopsies during Brahm’s Symphony #1. Like really bad oopsies. Bach’s Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor didn’t sound quite right either. Still, the Orchestra is a great place for me to zen out and really relax. I’ve been feeling so blah lately I rather needed it.

From there we went to Psycho Suzi’s and ate some food. nothing big. By this time it was getting bad. Cars were getting stuck in the middle of intersections. Thank Cthulhu for my Pikamobile’s turbo boost. By the time we got out of PS it was midnight and visibility was down to nil. Ice and snow were instantly clinging to my windshield wipers and so it really REALLY sucked dropping her off and then driving home. I think I went 20 mph on 35WS the whole way home. At times I had to stick my head out the window because the windshield wipers were so ineffectual.

I got home about midnight-thirty  after helping 2-3 people gte their cars unstuck. I was tired, irritable from the driving, and exhausted from pushing cars. Talked to a few friends, then read and eventually went to sleep.

I got up this morning at 7:45am, and found drifts up to my knees outside. The roads here STILL haven’t been plowed and I’m in fucking uptown off one of the busiest roads in Minneapolis. Insane. Totally insane.

Holy Shit, it’s a busy day

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

Okay. So far today, I’ve been doing laundry, I ran to target to buy a ton of stuff I needed ranging from a new Laundry hamper to light bulbs, had a Jamba Juice for my brunch and am finishing up two articles for Pokemon. I will still have to do dishes and clean my bathroom this weekend in addition to the concert tonight. Whew. Weekends are supposed to be relaxing.

Also, I have one last review left in me. It’ll be my 130th. Dreamcatcher sent me Broken Sword IV with a caveat to not let the current NATE staff touch it. Ouch.

Also, today is a crazy purchase day. For the first time in 5 years I bought a Transformer. Transforming the originals were a great stress relief for me and today at Target they had a target only limited edition two pack of Ultra Magnus and Skywarp. My favorite autobot and my favorite Decepticon. Out of the new Classic Deluxe line, Skywarp is probably the best TF I’ve seen since the G1 days. And hey, it’s rare as hell, so why not? I also grabbed Grimlock as an afterthought, and ALMOST picked up Jetfire due to the Robotech value, but he was $20 for a single guy and I was like “Naaaaah.” It’s bad if my stress level is so high that I blew 30 bucks on transformers…

So I now have three TF’s to go with my sole remaining guy from G1 - Ultra Magnus.

I can’t believe I did this but…

Last night was totally sweet. Got home, did about 200 reps with the ab wheel (An expert should be able to do three sets of 12. Ho ho ho.), and then Alex (not me, another Alex) dropped by and we went to the National Geographic event, Lions and Buffalo: Relentless Enemies. It was a two hour lecture with some movie clips on this particular pride of Lions in Botswana. It was very interesting and a lot of fun. I got my copy of the speakers’ book signed and I learned a lot.

Sometimes I feel pretty fucking old because most people my age just aren’t into learning for the sake of learning. It’s all booze, drugs, and sex. Now, I defintely get more than my fair share of the latter, but for me, I just can’t imagine NOT learning. There’s so much out there I don’t know and will never know. I’m just a very inquisitive person by nature and I love learning and trying new things. Hence the Chinese class and all the travelling to boot.

Of course, this love of learning is great dating wise because I actually want the girl to flap her gums endlessly. I love stories. Especially true stories.

After the event, we went to Famous Dave’s as we both really wanted fish and we couldn’t think of anything else open on a Thursday night at 10pm that served fish. Other Alex got catfish and I got the Cod/Ribs combo. So hungry! I have cod left over though and I forgot to bring it to work. Oh well, protein bar for lunch for Alex. Yay.

Oh! Also got to have a 30 minute or so IM session with Lori about all the stuff going on in our lives and future plans. Things are in motion writingwise…

No idea what it is, but the hits here have massively gone up this week. My actual readers/stalkers/ex’s finally finding the new blog mayhaps?

Thursday Stuff

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Allright. It’s Thursday! Whoo!

Tonight I’m going with another Alex to the Nation Geographic thing. Yay for wild animals! Yay for my new coffee table book getting signed.

Yesterday was Chinese class. I’m not liking the shift in teaching style. I learn languages from hearing, repeating and repetition. Now it’s just a blitz of new words that we hear 1-2 times at most. Still, it’s a fun class. Just too bad Hot Pavel turns out to be married. Lucky for Dan though he didn’t choose his original sentence idea. ;-) Mine was “I have 80,000 ducks.”

Haven’t watched Lost yet. Right now two things keep me watching:

a) Charlie’s death is a’comin’

b) The neat backwards track that was revealed by obssesive Lost fans in the “Not in Portland” episode.
